The map for this week (not the lab) is supposed to be an interesting map of the Commonwealth of Virginia. I thought that a map of the unexpected would be interesting, because....Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
Or earthquakes in Virginia. I think that's a bit more like it. Virginia is in a relatively geologically stable area of the planet as it isn't near any major fault boundaries, subduction zones, trenches, etc. The mountains to the west of our locale in the north of the state are old, on the scale of hundreds of millions to 1.3 billion years in age (depending upon the orogenic event) and are composed of stable granitic rocks.So who expects an earthquake map of Virginia? Or the Spanish Inquisition.... just sayin'.
